HOG® members know what a great place Ontario is for taking short, or longer, weekend rides. But if you haven’t ventured north of Barrie, or west of Pembroke, Northern Ontario, and Greater Sudbury in particular, offer riding experiences and hospitality that will keep you coming back.
Greater Sudbury is an easy day’s ride from most parts of Ontario. HWYS 400/69 north from Toronto, 17 from the east or west, and 144 from the north, will all take you here. For riders, the journey is as much as the destination. So, riding along these great highways, through boreal forests, past pristine lakes and Canadian Shield rock outcroppings, you won’t believe how quickly you get to Sudbury.
Check into one of the excellent accommodations. Then, you’ll be ready to take in all the great activities planned by the Rally Committee. Take a day or two more, and explore the Greater Sudbury area which stretches out over more than 3,200 square kilometres, and has 3,500 kilometres of roads. This place is BIG, and well worth seeing!
Greater Sudbury sits uniquely on what is called the Sudbury Basin. It is basically a crater formed by a meteorite impact over 2 billion years ago. The massive force created the conditions responsible for the rich mineral deposits mined here for over 100 years. You can learn all the details of this geological phenomenon by visiting Dynamic Earth, one of Sudbury’s leading attractions, and home of “The Big Nickel” (You can’t leave Sudbury without having your pic taken with the Big Nickel).
Sudbury also features a number of “hub and spoke” half day rides from the city core which take you into the Sudbury Basin, as you visit local communities like Capreol. Enjoy a delicious lunch at the M & R Grill and visit the Northern Ontario Railroad Museum & Heritage Centre, complete with an original “iron horse”, and other interesting railroad antiques.
Another option is to head up Municipal Road 35/HWY 144 toward Onaping Falls. You’ll ride past Vale’s nickel smelter operations and into the heart of the Sudbury Basin, rich in agricultural land. Try your luck at OLG Slots Sudbury, and ride up to the A.Y. Jackson Lookout to view the scenic Onaping River cascading down 150‘, into the Sudbury Basin.
For a full day ride, any one of the hub and spoke routes can be easily connected to ring roads which will take you completely around the Sudbury Basin. As you roll on the throttle, the size and natural beauty of the basin will certainly impress you. And, Sudbury’s many urban delights will keep you in comfort.
